This study was perfomed to investigate the effect of aerobic exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation on functional capacity, cardiopulmonary responses and ventricular function in patients who received percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty(PTCA). The subjects were 69 coronary artery disease patients who treated with PTCA. 40 patients in the exercise training group and 29 patients in control group. Exercise group performed aerobic exercise for 6months(Cardiac Rehabilitation(CR) Phase II and III), while control group did not. Before and after 6 months, the both groups were performed graded exercise test using modified Bruce protocol and echocardiogram. The results show that, in exercise group, the maximum exercise time, the maximum RPP, the maximum oxygen uptake were significantly higher and submaximum RPP and submaximum RPE were significantly lower compared with control group(p<0.05). In exercise group, total cholesterol, triglyceride and low-density lipoprotein level were significantly lower and the ejection fraction(%) was significantly higher(p<0.05). In conclusion, our findings indicate that cardiac rehabililtation results in the significant improvement of functional capacity and cardiopulmonary response and decreased restenosis rate of coronary artery in patients with ischemic heart disease.
